with an economic showdown. president obama and mitt romney squared off for the first of three presidential debates last night. in what some are calling a polite war of words, the candidates sparred over job creation, taxes and the future of health care. nbc's tracie potts is in denver for us. she has a preview. good morning to you, tracie. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. the pressure was on for romney to perform, to back up his ideas with details, taking on the man that even republicans called one of the most skilled debaters in modern politics. the point of this debate was to make differences clear on lowering the debt. >> you said you'd cut the deficit in half. it's four years later, we still have trillion-dollar deficit. >> the way we do is for additional cut, we ask for a dollar of additional revenue, paid for, as i indicated earlier, by asking those of us who have done very well in this country to contribute a little bit more to reduce the deficit. >> reporter: the president insisted romney would spend $5 trillion on tax breaks favoring the wealthy. >> math, common sense and our history show

portman, the one that plays president obama in the debate camp practice sessions. mitt romney is getting ready for the next session, next debate, hoping his mum carries over next week. >> john harwood is cnbc's chief washington correspondent. thanks for being here. i don't know if it's possible to strip politics away from these new unemployment numbers, but if you can, explain, does the president get credit for these numbers coming down, and how real are they? >> well, the president gets credit or blame for whatever the economic conditions are on his watch. these are numbers that are better than they've been, but they're still not good numbers. 7.8% is a high unemployment rate. we've got an economy that's not growing very fast. but it's certainly good news for the president to be able to say that 7.8%, the rate when i took office, we're back down there again. but i think people make too much political impact of these jobs numbers, because they don't need a government statistic to tell them how they feel about it. >> but then you have somebody influential like jack welch who tweets someth

romney told a crowd of thousands in denver that wednesday's first debate with president obama won't be about winning or losing but what he called something bigger than that. romney plans to spend today preparing for the face-off at his hotel outside denver. president obama meanwhile is doing his debate cramming in nevada where he delivered pizzas to a local campaign office monday and thanked volunteers personally. >>> the faa is investigating why passenger seats came loose on three different american airlines flights. the latest incident happened monday aboard a new york to miami flight. on saturday a similar problem forced a boston to miami flight to make an emergency landing. american says that same plane was involved in a loose seat incident last week which they thought had been fixed. fortunately no one on the flights was hurt. both of the boeing 757s involved had recently gone through maintenance that involved moving the seats. american says there could be a problem with the way the seats fit into tracks on the floor. >>> a new york state college freshman murdered in her dorm
